A clinical framework

Career Distress Response™

A chronic, multidimensional pattern of distress that can emerge when identity, self-worth, and emotional security become psychologically fused with career-related success.

Many accomplished professionals describe something that does not fit neatly into burnout. Performance holds. The résumé keeps improving. And yet something underneath has gone quiet, tight, or brittle.

Career Distress Response is an attempt to describe that pattern with more precision. At its center is Career Identity Fusion — the point at which who a person is becomes difficult to separate from what they achieve. When fusion is strong, ordinary professional setbacks are experienced as threats to the self, and the distress that follows spreads well beyond the job.

The pattern is described across six domains. It is a framework for understanding, not a diagnosis, and it is explored in depth in The Great Unraveling.

Six domains

Where career distress shows up.

01

Emotional

Anxiety, irritability, flatness, dread, or a low hum of unease that follows a person home.

02

Cognitive

Rumination, difficulty switching off, self-criticism, and thinking that narrows under pressure.

03

Physical

Sleep disruption, fatigue, tension, and the physiological cost of sustained activation.

04

Relational

Reduced presence and availability with partners, family, friends, and colleagues.

05

Personal life

Interests, rest, creativity, and identity outside work quietly contracting over time.

06

Work patterns

Overextension, difficulty disengaging, and working in ways that no longer serve the work.

This material is educational. It is not a diagnostic instrument and is not a substitute for clinical assessment or care.

Where it leads

Toward Career Harmony

Career Harmony is not a program or a product. It describes a relationship with work in which ambition and achievement can coexist with wellbeing, relationships, identity, and a life beyond the job.
