For coaches

Bring Career Distress language into your client work.

Your clients are describing something that workload management cannot resolve. This is the conceptual grounding — what Career Distress Response is, how Career Identity Fusion works underneath it, and where coaching responsibly ends.

The grounding

Three ideas worth having language for.

Concept

Career Distress Response

A distinct pattern of professional suffering that shows up across six domains — emotional, cognitive, physical, relational, personal, and in the way a person works. It is not a workload problem, and reducing hours rarely resolves it.

Mechanism

Career Identity Fusion

When self-worth and self-concept merge with the professional role, ordinary career events register as threats to the self. Fusion is the vulnerability that precedes and intensifies career distress.

Boundaries

Where coaching ends

Career distress can travel with clinical presentations. Knowing the markers that call for a referral — and how to make one without damaging the coaching alliance — is part of practicing responsibly in this territory.

The framework

Career Harmony: four pillars, ten practices.

The arc a person moves through as career distress resolves. Coaches often recognize their own work somewhere inside it — the value is in knowing which pillar a client is actually standing in, and what tends to be premature.
